  • Integrated Design: Unlike double-wishbone systems, the MacPherson setup uses the strut itself as a primary structural member. The top of the strut is mounted to the vehicle's chassis (the strut tower), while the bottom is connected to the wheel hub assembly.

  • Geometry: A lower control arm (wishbone) is used to locate the wheel laterally and longitudinally, while the strut handles the vertical loads and steering pivot movement.

  • Steering Function: Because the entire strut assembly rotates with the steering knuckle, it requires a top-mount bearing to allow the spring and strut to rotate freely without binding during steering maneuvers.

  • Component Replacement: When replacing struts, it is standard practice to inspect the coil springs and strut mounts, as the entire assembly is often under significant spring tension and requires a strut compressor for safe disassembly.
